Transfer Procedures
Transferring Private Number Plates
Transferring a Number Plate can be tricky, however if you are buying from us this should not concern you as we take care of the process as part of our service.
Many people are still interested in what is involved even though they don't have to carry it out. Here are some of the major points :-.
Transfers fall into two main categories, ie "vehicle to vehicle" or transfer from or to a "certificate". "Vehicle to Vehicle" transfers are expedited using form V317 along with vehicle documents for both the "donor" and "recipient" vehicles, the transfer fee is £80. These certificates come in two "flavours", firstly the V750 is a pink certificate and holds a registration number which has never been on a vehicle , the V778 is a retention certificate , coloured green and is for a number plate which has already been issued to a vehicle, then transferred onto this retention certificate. In both cases the transfer fee has been pre-paid. Transfer fees are normally £105. Only the recipient vehicle's documents are required as there is no donor.
Vehicles receiving or donating a private number plate should have a current M.O.T ( if the vehicle is over 3 years old) and must have a current road tax disc ( If the tax disc EXPIRED less than 6 months ago a transfer may still be possible).
Vehicles not subject to the M.O.T. test are excluded from cherished transfers so tractors etc are no good.
The DVLNI have their own V750 certificates ( there is currently no retention scheme in N.Ireland) however a Private Number Plate held on a V750NI can only be assigned to a N.Ireland vehicle. It is possible to transfer them onto a mainland registered vehicle but extra fees and costs are involved.

Due to the unique nature of private number plates, for example "car registrations are not items of property in their own right. They are assigned, and may be withdrawn by the Secretary of State. They are assigned to the vehicle rather than its keeper" and many of the car registrations we have available to us involve a third party, therefore unless the registration is one of our own cherished number plates we MUST check availability before we can confirm that it is possible to transfer it. Similarly we rely on these third parties to inform us that it has been sold. If you see "your" cherished number plate on our website and it should not be there, we would welcome your feedback so that we can rectify the mistake. With regard to the Distance Selling Regulations, we must notify you that as the contract will begin as soon as payment is made, the cooling off period and right to cancel will no longer apply. This website contains cherished number plates from our own stock, car registrations where we are acting as an agent and government stock. We reserve the right to withdraw from sale or change the price of any private number plate without notice. All personalised number plates on this website are subject to a D.O.T. transfer fee, some are also subject to V.A.T. at 17.5%. Additional costs are sometimes applicable for the transfer of personalised number plates to N.Ireland... E.&.O.E.
